When it comes time to install concrete pavers, or any kind of pavers, in a new driveway, there are a few things you should watch out for, especially if a contractor is doing the work for you. When installing concrete pavers, you need to make sure that you are installing the right foundation that will support and protect them. The foundation for pavers is the most important aspect of the project in many ways, simply because the longevity and durability of the project is directly tied to the base. If the base is weak or hastily assembled, it will spell trouble for the project for its entire lifetime. You will have to deal with settling, cracking, and other issues with your paver project. Occasionally I am asked the question: are brick pavers permeable? Presumably it is asked by some homeowner who has had issues with water drainage around his or her home in the past, and they want to make sure they won’t have issues in the future.
To this I answer – yes, to a certain extent! Given the proper instruction and the proper materials, brick pavers are more permeable than many other hardscape options, including asphalt and concrete, but less permeable than yet others.

Is acid washing concrete pavers a good idea? In a word:
NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Here’s Why
It’s a horrific idea, based on the chemistry involved between the interaction of concrete and acid. The alkaline nature (aka basic nature) of concrete, especially in the cement paste that holds it all together, will react with the acid, especially a strong acid like muriatic acid or hydrochloric acid. It will cause the cement and concrete to weaken, pit, break apart, or even stain.
In fact, those who are looking to stain their concrete on purpose use acid stains for just this reason. If you just want to clean your [...] Continue Reading…

Winter is coming – that means the holidays are here, and fun times will certainly be had by all. But is your pavers installation ready? Of course, we know that concrete pavers are incredibly durable, especially to freezing and snow and sleet and ice, but you should still keep your eye out on the projects during these potentially harsh months.
For instance, if you live in an area with snowfall, will your pavers be ready to be shoveled or plowed? This is especially important with driveways that will be plowed – if they have any uneven spots, the plow could [...] Continue Reading…
